CYCLING AND PEDESTRIAN CONNECTION BEWEENT BARCELONA & ESPLUGUES DE LLOBREGAT
The proposed path for pedestrians and bicycles adapts its layout in order to adjust it as much as possible to the ground flush and to offer cyclists the best possible slopes. Sometimes walkway – above the access lane to Las Rondes – others tunnel – recycling a disused access lane – the road redefines the freeway margins in a friendly way. The aim is to smooth the landscape impact while willing to create a green urban connectivity along the route between Cervantes Park and the avenue of Jacinto Esteva Fontanet in Esplugues de Llobregat.
It can be said it is a small intervention, rather a micro-urbanism intervention easy to execute, yet capable of impacting beyond its area. The project’s supra-municipal condition makes it suitable to be managed by the metropolitan entity, which with a multi-scale view - metropolitan and local – determines its scope strategically for the structuring of the metropolitan territory. It is a small intervention with a reasonable budget justified by the difficulty of solving the contact between a rigid infrastructure such as the highway with one as light as the proposed road.
The urbanization project traces the bike lane and designs some rest areas destined for pedestrians. The design is based on vegetable flowerbeds along with a set of pavements – from acid-conditioned concrete to a seen arid for pedestrians and finely cast concrete for bicycles. Among the proposal’s most representative elements are the walls and gabion fences. The walls are made of galvanized iron mesh structure filled with stones, which allow vegetation to grow and provide continuity to an image of the whole mainly green. As for vegetation, native species have been chosen which adapt quickly to the environment and guarantee their subsistence in drought conditions, while having the virtue of varying seasonally and offering colour variations throughout the year.
