Cycling and pedestrian connection between Barcelona and Esplugues de Llobregat

The new cycling path, with the character of a greenway, and a peaceful circulation, has become a space that evokes rural roads, beyond the city and road infrastructures, transforming a forgotten space into a space for meeting and continuity.

A BIKE LANE CONNECTING MUNICIPALITIES AND NATURAL SPACES

The project consists of a pedestrian and bicycle path that connects Avinguda Diagonal with Avinguda dels Paisos Catalans in Esplugues de Llobregat, in one of the most difficult enclaves of the metropolitan road network, the junction of the B-20 and the B -23. A road junction, which has been a barrier for 60 years, and that this path allows to cross in the most direct way possible, with a decided commitment to non-motorized mobility, through a biophilic city: healthier, with less pollution, and more accessible to the people. The new passage brings the two municipalities together with a route for cycling or pedestrian use, in a renaturalized and landscaped environment. The path connects the urban network of bike and pedestrian lanes with the system of open spaces in Collserola Park.

A DIAGONAL BEYOND BARCELONA

This intervention is able to have repercussions beyond its scope and of structuring the metropolitan territory since this new green infrastructure allows the pedestrian and cyclable connection between Barcelona and the cities of the Baix Llobregat. It connects the final section of Av. Diagonal with Esplugues de Llobregat, through Parc de Finestrelles, a connection point with the Collserola Park and the Carretera de les Aigües.

The proposal redefines the margins of the highway in a friendly way to enhance the urban green and soften the landscape impact of the route. The objective is to establish a better relationship between the built tissues and their natural environment.

A LAYOUT THAT CONNECTS THE METROPOLITAN GREEN

The proposed path for pedestrians and bicycles adapts its layout in order to adjust as much as possible to the slopes of the terrain and offer optimal slopes for the cyclist. Sometimes a walkway – above the access lane to Las Rondas – and others a tunnel – recycling a disused access lane – the road redefines the margins of the highway in a gentle way to soften the landscape impact while having the Willingness to create urban green connectivity along the route between Cervantes Park and Avenida de Jacinto Esteva Fontanet in Esplugues de Llobregat.

We can say that it is a small micro-urbanism intervention that is easy to carry out, but with a capacity to have an impact beyond its scope. The supra-municipal condition of the project makes it ideal to be managed by the metropolitan entity, which with a multi-scale perspective – metropolitan and local – determines its scope in a strategic way for the structuring of the metropolitan territory. A small intervention with a coherent budget and justified by the difficulty of solving the contact of infrastructure as rigid as the highway with another as light as the proposed road.

THE MATERIALITY OF THE PROJECT

The urbanization project traces the bike lane and projects some rest areas for pedestrians with a set of pavements – acid-finished concrete with the aggregate seen by pedestrians and floated finished concrete for bicycles – and vegetable beds.

One of the most representative elements of the proposal are the gabion walls and fences, walls made with a galvanized iron mesh structure filled with stones-, which allow supporting vegetation to grow and provide continuity to an overall image mainly vegetable.

Regarding the vegetation, it has been chosen for native species that adapt quickly to the environment and that guarantee their subsistence in dry conditions, at the same time that they have the virtue of varying seasonally and offering color variations throughout the year.
