Joan Ortoll Sports Center in Calafell

RECOVER AND REUSE

The project is planned with criteria of economic optimization. Recover and reuse, rather than destroy to raise again. It was decided to reform the existing pavilion and expand it, thus achieving a total of three covered sports courts, a goal impossible to achieve with the same budget allocated entirely to a new building. In the existing building, surgery is carried out, trying to eliminate discordant elements and enhancing the most significant ones, such as the large concrete trusses, which can be fully appreciated thanks to the action. A large central skylight bathes the main court with overhead light and allows natural ventilation. The fiber cement roof was replaced, the changing rooms were renovated and circulation was reconfigured, enabling a new walkway on the west side that allows the evacuation of spectators according to current safety standards. In the theater the lobby is rethought, an elevator is incorporated and the acoustic enclosure of the hall is remade with the same objectives.

The new covered outdoor rinks, intended for the training of hockey and skating teams, make up a large longitudinal space attached to the east side of the existing building. The tracks are covered with a light metallic structure formed by a succession of porticoes with Boyd-type girders. The light pierces the roof through skylights and also filters through the permeable facade, in an image related to the large agricultural hangars, the translucent skin greenhouses that are often scattered throughout the landscape. In the southern area, a new body of changing rooms and a new main entrance hall to the sports center is being built. All the machinery for the equipment installations is concentrated on the deck. The new access volume, together with the existing body where the bar is located, configures a reception space that acts as an exterior lobby and makes it possible to connect with the rest of the facilities and the car park.

A breathable green skin

The sports center is located on the island of facilities located in the inner strip of the municipality of Calafell Playa, in an urban fabric formed by isolated buildings of diverse scale and volume, very close to the main connection of the municipality with the highway. An area located on the urbanized border, bordering the hills and forests that separate Segur from Calafell. The intervention addresses the expansion and reform of the equipment. The building, built at the end of the seventies, had undergone specific actions throughout its useful life that, responding to different requirements, had led to added constructions of a very diverse nature. The project faces the challenge of expanding the building, which includes a sports center and a theater, with two new covered courts and changing rooms with the aim of restoring the unity of the built complex and returning the equipment to its referential role in the municipality.

On the façade, the breathable green skin of folded metal sheet that acts as sun protection is the unifying element of the whole. The old sports hall, the theater, the new courts, the new changing rooms, the new entrance, and the bar are wrapped in a single green metallic veil. The skin is made up of V-shaped pieces 50 cm wide, tongue and groove. The faces of the V-shaped pieces are opaque or perforated to ensure good solar protection on the east and west facades, where the tracks are oriented. The new skin also serves as a support to respond to a particular requirement: to set up a memorial of the most significant names of the hockey club. Inside the sports center, all circulation is reorganized from the new entrance hall. In this case, the green metal slat ceiling acts as a unifying element inside the building. The characteristic green covers and identifies the circulation spaces, both on the existing track and in the new buildings.
