Park on the covering of the railway in Vilafranca del Penedés
A new free space gained on the train tracks that introduces the "cool island" effect within the city through a linear park.
The Rambla will become a green corridor that will connect with the axis of the road and other residential areas. In favor of the new walkable and accessible city, the promenade will be cleared of the invasion of the car and free movement will be offered to the pedestrian throughout the whole street.
The redevelopment project of the Rambla de la Girada section opts for a sustainable rehabilitation applying a paradigm shift in which slow mobility is prioritized and universal accessibility is guaranteed.
The promenade nowadays has a traditional symmetrical Rambla section, where the car is the protagonist and the space for pedestrians remains in the background.
The project plans to maximize the area for pedestrians, reduce the passage of vehicles exclusively to neighbors and services and increase green areas. In this way, it will become a new ecological green corridor, which promotes social cohesion and decarbonization with the aim of creating a healthier city prepared to combat the climate emergency.
The project proposes a sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) that retains, laminates and infiltrates rainwater within the area. The SUDS favor the recharge of the phreatic level and reduce the water that reaches the municipal sewer network.
To redevelop the promenade, it is decided to maximize the green area, accompanying the large existing banana trees with new shrub vegetation that will favor biodiversity. The use of draining and permeable pavements will help to mitigate the heat island and to control the thermal environment of the entire sector.
For a good sustainable management of rainwater to be possible, two longitudinal biotopes are formed that collect the water along the entire boulevard and lead it to the low points. Thanks to some dikes, built with recycled elements from the construction rubble, it is possible to brake and better control the speed of the water.
The entire promenade is configured following a symmetrical type section that varies minimally according to the requirements of the project. In order to pacify the street, the space for the vehicle is limited to one lane in each direction, eliminating the existing parking strips.
The entire section of the street is on a single shared platform of 5.5 meters paving stone. Next, a strip of draining cobblestone of varying width allows a new space for the implantation of the existing restoration terraces.
Alternating with the terraces, there will be rest areas with urban furniture under the shade of the trees. The exemplary banana trees are kept since they are part of the Rambla and have great botanical value. To accompany them, two new tree lines are planted (one on each side) to provide the space with more shade.
Due to the slope of the Rambla de la Girada, the proposal presents the strategy of forming three terraces along the street to create smaller flat rest areas that are more friendly and with more possibility of use.
In this way, by reducing the slope to zero, it is easier to incorporate a soft pavement with gravel and the implementation of urban furniture and children’s games. In this section there are three terraces with a drop of 90cm respectively, connected to each other with accessible ramps.
The containment elements of these terraces are formalized in the form of tiers, which not only have structural functionality but also allow them to be used as amphitheaters for small events. Also, the staggering allows the planting of floral plant species that favor the extension of the green.
