The development allows for the recovery of an inner block with a green zone and a new facility.
The new Mercedes-Benz eco-neighborhood, a project to reactivate this old industrial area with new economic and residential activity, that plays its part to the major urban regeneration project of Bon Pastor and Besòs areas
This new project will turn an old car factory into a new factory of ideas, innovation, and knowledge. The transformation of La Mercedes is an example of the strategy to regenerate, reactivate and rehabilitate the Besòs neighborhoods towards a new city model.
The Mercedes-Benz factory complex, in disuse since its closure in 2007 and with more than 90,000 m2, offers an unprecedented opportunity for transformation to create a new mixed, compact and inclusive urban space between the neighborhoods of Sant Andreu del Palomar and Bon Pastor. It is about updating the industrial uses that it had to the economy of the 21st century and thus generating a new neighborhood in an area that until now has been closed.
A new sustainable and resilient environment prepared to face the climatic emergency, where housing, green areas, and new facilities are given great prominence.
To preserve the memory of the city’s 20th-century industrial architecture, the new factory will maintain the most representative buildings of the complex, providing them with a new economic activity to promote the surrounding industrial estates. The central nave will be converted into a new square, and the buildings around it will house economic activities linked to the creativity, design, and new technologies sector. To this end, an agreement of intent has been signed with Elisava Escola Universitària de Disseny i Enginyeria de Barcelona, the Universitat de Vic – Universitat Central de Catalunya and the Fundació Leitat.
