Calafell municipal market

The new municipal market is the starting point of a new nucleus of facilities in a central area for the growing population of Calafell Beach. This nucleus will consist of a pre-school center, an infant and primary school, a civic center, and a library, making it a vital part of Calafell’s civic and social life.

Calafell is a municipality on the Catalan coast that has its population divided into two urban centres, one historical and foundational, away from the coast and with a constant occupational use, and another urban centre next to the sea, resulting from the growth in tourism and with a maximum occupation only in the summer months. This social and urban structure has historically determined the territorial implementation of municipal facilities and infrastructure. However, this situation has evolved and nowadays the coastal core has consolidated as a zone of first residence and therefore constant occupation, which has led to the revision of the map of municipal investments with the aim of balancing the provision of facilities between both sectors.

In the framework of this review, we developed in 2007 a plan for the implementation of an endowment centre in an area strategically located between both conurbations. The plan contemplated the construction of a market, a nursery, a CEIP, a civic centre and a library. It also integrated thembuilding of the old market, which was given a new use and a parking area for vehicles. The economic crisis obviously slowed the operation, but in 2011 the initiative was resumed with the construction of the market, as a first step to completing the fabric of the planned facilities.

The functional organization of the market is determined, on the one hand, by the study of mobility that foresees a double accessibility, from the Passeig de la Unió and from the new square and, on the other, by the two commercial programs that will coincide in it, the market stalls, with a sales system of small individual stands, and the supermarket, organized as an enclosure with single entrance and exit.

The market thus proposed is organized from a large central axis that joins both approaches, leaving the stalls to one side, organized into streets and on the other side the supermarket. This axis is understood as a street that allows pedestrians to cross the facilities from east to west, with the intermediate space in turn endowed with greater height and uniqueness thanks to a large longitudinal skylight that runs along its length. This 9-metre high skylight brings in natural light and ventilation. In the exterior, the skylight takes on a major role at each end with the semi-circular canopies that make the entrance porch to each one of the accesses to the central axis.

Outside, special attention has been given to locating those amenities that generate activity such as outdoor stalls, cafeteria, etc. in the area overlooking the public square. Constructively, we have opted for prefabrication in the structure and for the industrialized materials, such as corrugated steel sheet in the exterior facades or prefabricated concrete with corrugated relief, used as the base of the building.
