Joan Gamper Sports City in Sant Joan Despí

The Joan Gamper training facility project for Fútbol Club Barcelona, in the municipality of Sant Joan Despí, is a particularly important intervention for the promotion of sport in Catalonia. The project has developed slowly over recent years, materializing the club’s old dream of bringing together its technical and sporting activities for professionals and amateurs in one place. This ranges from installations for training the first and second football teams, for grassroots football, and for basketball, handball, and hockey.

The sports complex covers approximately 20 hectares, of which 13.5 hectares are given over to sport and the rest to road infrastructures and green areas. The training facility is laid out on two different levels to distinguish the first team and grassroots training pitches. The design included a series of buildings to serve the various sporting activities, which are laid out around the edge of the complex in accordance with the function of each activity

According to this criterion, the arrangement includes a sports block, a building with changing rooms for the first team, an office and service building, changing rooms for the grassroots football squad and a residence for sportsmen and women. The main buildings were designed with a unitary approach, with a single roof that accommodates them all and presents the main entrance to the complex via a large porch.

The Joan Gamper training facility consists of environmentally sustainable installations and is capable of producing at least the amount of energy it needs to run. It shows off its energy collectors by arranging them vertically on a tower that is designed as a landmark, presenting a point of reference and the image of the Club.
