Transformació urbana de la carretera C-245 al Baix Llobregat, Barcelona

Urban transformation of the C-245 road in Baix Llobregat, Barcelona

The purpose of implementing a platform reserved for buses and other authorised vehicles, with the aim of restructuring the mobility criteria of mass transit of the area, allows the idea of a refurbishment that could focus on the urban character. This would turn this C-245 stretch into a backbone pathway for the different towns which it goes through.

The baix llobregat is a key region for the urban, social and political development of Barcelona metropolitan area, to which it belongs. The presence of the main connectivity systems of Cataluña within this region (motorways, airport, port, high-speed train, etc.) and its progressive population growth have established its strong peri-urban character, not only with regards to its morphological structure, but also related to its general aspect.

An example of this situation could be the C-245 minor road, and more specifically on the stretch that links Castelldefels railway station with Cornellá de Llobregat centre. This section of the road, approximately 11 km long, links the towns of Castelldefels, Gavá, Viladecans, Sant Boi de Llobregat and Cornellá de Llobregat, where it connects with the train, subway and the Baix Llobregat tram, going through urban areas, industrial sites as well as through areas to be built and developed; it even turns into an expressway to cross, by means of a bridge, the River Llobregat.

This refurbishment, apart from the design of the platform reserved for buses and authorised vehicles itself, should involve a great reduction of private traffic and of the surface parking spaces, an implementation (or an improvement) of specific areas for pedestrians and bicycles, as well as a deep improvement of the urban and environmental quality of the resulting zones.

The empowerment of slow mobility systems (pedestrians and cyclists) along this road could be complemented with a reserve of walking areas (approximately 20 metres within the 50 metres-type section) that would improve the urban connection among the five towns. In order to complete this connectivity, special projects will be required in order to link appropriately Sant Boi with Cornellá city centre and the River Llobregat banks.
