RECUPERACIÓ DE L’ESPAI FLUVIAL DEL RIU LLOBREGAT A SANT BOI DE LL.
Historically, the Llobregat River has been one of the main infrastructure corridors of the metropolitan area of Barcelona. During these last decades development of the metropolis roads, highways, railways, high-speed trains and all kinds of network facilities have passed on a territorial scale. This process resulted in a widespread deterioration of its natural space condition, its habitats, water quality, etc. However, the succession of infrastructures generated along the river has become a huge obstacle, blocking the access to the river in many municipalities.
Lately, our attitude as a society towards Llobregat has changed. We want to recover the river, we urge to reclaim and improve its ecological values and we wish to take advantage of its great potential as a public space within the city. Based on this global idea, in the stretch between Sant Boi and El Prat de Llobregat, we put forward a landscaping proposal which recovers the river for social uses and leisure activities. A park is designed in the outskirts of the encircling municipalities which improve the connectivity between their limits and their access to the river. The project is based on isolated interventions which share a common aim: recovering the river and transforming it into a green space connected to the cities and their surroundings.
In this first stage of the environmental recovery of the Llobregat River different actions are proposed. For instance, cross-wise connections between the existing roads are located along the river edges, such as the walkway in Cornella which enables to cross the river, as well as an easy access to the city center. Another example is the new pedestrian ford in the C-245. It consists on a concrete slab supported by winding pillars aiming to recall the aggregation of objects resulting from a flood. Furthermore, the project contains different access areas in order to ease pedestrians’ path to the river. Sant Boi’s has the closest urban core to El Llobregat, but it also has one of the most complicated connections with the river due to the amount of infrastructures acting as a blockage between city and river. Consequently, we have decided to place on of these access areas in front of the Roman Baths Museum. It is proposed as an access plaza facing the river.
The proposal’s development aims to understand the river from two complementary points of view. Firstly, it considers the river as a living being, constantly changing, full of life and a natural space that has its own dynamics and running. On the other hand, it regards El Llobregat as a non-urban and leisure green space for the citizens enjoyment, in harmony with the environment.
